Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley initially as an A1 Pacific, Flying Scotsman rolled out of Doncaster Works in February 1923, although it did not bear its name until 1924, when the loco was chosen to operate the LNER’s new non-stop service “The Flying Scotsman”. Mid-way through Flying Scotsman’s mainline career, it was transformed into the much-improved A3 Pacific, featuring a higher-pressure boiler with more efficient steam flow, which saw it shine into the latter years of the steam era.
